A Weekend in Bordeaux 10 - 12 Sept
The weather wasn't great on Friday in Uzerche, but a break allowed us to walk to the station rather than taking the car there. The train journey was long (around 4.5 hours each way), with two connections - but the trains were all punctual (both going and coming back) so, despite some connection times a low a 9 minutes, the journeys went without a hitch.
The station was just outside the historical centre with a 30 minute walk to the hotel (also just outside the historical centre on the opposite bank of the Garonne). The Hotel des Voyageurs was a only a 2 star, but had great reviews on Expedia; mainly due to the delightful owner who simply couldn't do enough to make your stay as good as it could be. The rooms was nice enough and reasonably spacious and the breakfast was nice and reasonably priced.
Friday night we walked to la Place Victoire, where I was to meet a friend the following morning, to see how long it took. We enjoyed ice-cream and frozen yoghurt - I was rather greedy.
On Saturday morning we met a fellow wargamer, Pascal, who had offered us a tour of his hometown. This proved to be excellent and we saw and learned of aspects of the city that we would otherwise have been ignorant of. One of the highlights for me was the Monument aux Girondins. It isn't often that I will say that about a fountain. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture. In the afternoon we relaxed in the Public Gardens.
On Sunday morning we took the river shuttle (probably the highlight of Sally's visit) to the Cite du Vin.
We didn't visit this the Cite du Vin (due to limited time), but instead headed to the Bassins des Lumieres. These are the WWII U-boat pens that currently contain an art installation which projects images of paintings (by Renoir, Monet and others) onto the walls and the water. It is truly breath-taking and something we are both so glad we saw.
We then took the boat and a bus back to the station to start the journey back to Uzerche.
