Independence Day, July 4th

Independence Day, how apt. We’re also free to head to France as the government has lifted its restrictions on traveling abroad (well to a number of countries, including France) and, tomorrow, France will be lifting the 14-day voluntary ‘confinement’ that it asked travellers from the UK to undertake.

Having heard rumours of these impending changes I have renewed our travel insurance and European breakdown cover. We are ready.

The car is loaded to the gunwales for our first trip to France in nine months.

First though, we have completed the first 80-miles of the journey by heading to St Albans to see Serena (and her mum & dad) for the first time in four months. We were up at 0600 and on the road an hour later, the idea being to beat the rush as this was the first day that two-households were allowed to meet indoors –  we expected a lot of traffic as folk took advantage, like us, of the chance to be with family.

We've had a great day. Serena, now three, was a delight. The inability to have a hug didn’t bother her in the least though; unlike us.

An early night as the plan was to be up at midnight and on the road the France tout suite.
